I get to work with Dana Dearmond today! Triangle Films, which shot my scene with Ginger, has hired me again. I'm looking quite forward to it, I must say. It will be our first scene together and I'll tell you all about it.

Ernest and I got to see Tina Turner in concert this past Monday. Oh. My. God! She is amazing! It's her "50th Anniversary Tour" and it's spectacular. Two 45-minute acts. Out of 90 minutes, Tina is onstage for at least 70 of them. Five costume changes. Four back up dancers. Two back up singers. A six-man band. Four "ninjas," dancer/acrobats who filled up the time between costume changes. A two-song encore. Great stagecraft. She is simply the best entertainer I've seen in a long time. Her stamina is astounding. Her dancing has lost none of its intensity, and her legs are as good as ever. She, herself, looks better now at 67 than she did at 30. None of her singing sounded in the least winded, and her voice is as strong and steady as it's ever been. She did a nice mix of her own material and some covers, including, "Mountain High, River Deep," "Nutbush City Limits," "Golden Eye," "Simply the Best," "Rain," "Private Dancer," "Help," "Jumpin' Jack Flash," and a lot more I either don't recall or wasn't familiar with in the first place.

A good friend of ours bought tickets for about ten of his pals, so it was a jolly party. We had good seats down on the floor of the Staples Center, and there were big screens high up on the wall next to the stage. As soon as it started, everyone was on his feet, so Ernest and I stood up so we could see. When I download the pix off of my camera (I didn't take very many, as it's a small camera), you'll see.

Of course, she ended the show with a rousing rendition of "Proud Mary." I've seen this bit on film before, but it's really great in person. She's so in control of herself as an artist and entertainer, and takes so much joy in performing and just reflects back to the audience its adoration of her, and is so comfortable with that adoration, it was a revelation to see. I've seen many good acts in my time, but this was up in the top five Great Rock Shows I've ever seen.

So, thanks Jim! Mwah! I wanna be like Tina when I grow up!

The fires in the norther San Fernando Valley are still raging as we speak. The Santa Ana winds are a deadly mix with fire and neither of them are at all controlled. They're about 12 miles due north of us, so we're in no danger, but the air is bad for Ernest, who has athsma.

SOLO SHOW TOMORROW: My maybe guest did not get back in touch with me, so I’ve got to think it’s a “no” from her, and my backup guest got a paying gig. Oy.

On the 15th, I work again for Triangle Films, the lovely ladies who brought Ginger and me together. I don’t know who my partner is, but I know it’ll be a woman who digs women!

NO SHOW TUESDAY. I’m teaching a class on spanking at the Pleasure Chest (www.pleasurechest.com) that night. Tonight I’m teaching a class on blowjobs, and on Wednesday Ernest and I will teach a class on Kink and Romance. I’ll be back on the 7th of October for my next show.

So much has happened since I posted last I hardly know where to start. I know I haven’t told you hardly anything about Dark Odyssey, except that I had a great time, and I’ve shot five, yes five, scenes this past week, including one that is a Big Deal, porn-history-wise.

So, I’ll work my way through the workweek and go back and talk about DO after that.

Before I get into the descriptions of my scenes, did you catch the Chris Rock special on HBO Saturday? He is a fucking genius. Ernest and I kept looking at each other with that, “Did he just say what I thought he said?” look. Chris is so right on about so many things and he’s fearless. After a pretty slow summer, I got a slew of work in September, for which I’m very grateful, indeed.

As you can see by the rest of this post, my life does not suck.

Off to San Francisco today! Tonight, at the Center for Sex and Culture (sexandculture.org) I'll be attending a fundraiser for Prop. Hard to believe it's been seven years since the World Trade Center attacks. We're stuck in a stupid war in Iraq when we should have been fighting the correct war in Afghanistan. But, noooo, our moronic president just had to go and whip Saddam's butt. And it looks like the American people might just elect the Republican slate. On one hand, I think that it would be terrible for the Democrats to once again snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory. On the other hand, why should the Democrats take the blame for the damage done by Bush and Co.?

But Governor Palin is a dangerous, right wing crackpot looney, and I don't want her a heartbeat away from having to face down Vladimir Putin.

Sorry for the show problem on Tuesday. There was a major modem/router snafu at my end and we couldn't get it to go in time for the show. I'll do a solo on Tuesday when I get back from Dark Odyssey, and get the guests back in the later part of the month.

I'm feeling a bit sickish, so I won't be doing as much at DO as usual. I have three classes to teach, ninety minutes each, and then I'll just hang in bed for as much time as needed. There will be plenty of eager service bottoms to help me out, and I'm gonna take 'em up on it!

Is it just me, or is Governor Palin a dangerous, right-wing religious looney? I mean, really! She admits to not knowing what the VP actually does. Her record doesn't quite mesh with the glowing rhetoric of her supporters. She has zero experience in world affairs, and no record of even having an opinion of them.

Stupid as we seem to be, the media are all over her personal story. If you go to the Huffington Post and search for John Stewart, there is a great clip of his roasting Karl Rove and James Dobson flip-flopping on several positions so that they can come out in support of McCain's cynical choice of running mate. I'm with Ms. Huffington herself: Palin is a dangerous distraction away from McCain's dismal record as being in Bush's pocket 90% of the time.

It's enough to make you crazy. And to think, it might even work. We might have a dangerous, right-wing looney a heartbeat away from the Presidency.

Back From Florida

It was great meeting up with Alex in Miami last week. He found a great funky hotel right on the water in South Beach, so we had some nice views when I wasn’t on the set.

I’ve been catching the Olympics as I can, and I’m enjoying it a lot. Late at night is the next afternoon in China, so they’re showing events live. The men’s team gymnastics has been fantastic, I think. It was pretty amazing that the US team pulled off a bronze, even after losing their two top guys, including the reigning Olympic champ from ‘04.

Tempe and Arvada

I had a great time this past weekend at the Fascinations stores in Tempe, AZ. and Arvada, CO. Arvada is a suburb of Denver. The stores are huge, well over 10,000 sq. ft., full of all sorts of sex gear, from the silly (dickhead hats) to the sublime (Olivia posters and silicone lube).

Before my talk in each place I had a little Q&A with the staff members. The talk in Tempe was very well attended, close to 75 people. The questions were surprisingly open minded. A lot of people wanted to know how to navigate open relationships, how to bring up the subject, what to do about hurt feelings, etc. I didn’t have one question about a specific technique at all, which surprised me. Not even about anal sex, which is usually right up there for people.

I talked for two hours and then had to stop so I could sign autographs before we all went to dinner. People were very nice, as always.

I flew to Colorado on Saturday morning, got to the store, put on some makeup, spoke with the staff, did my talk, changed quickly, and drove to the airport to fly home. Whew! I was sad I couldn’t stay overnight, as Shayla lives near there, as does Ernest’s oldest friend, Paul. It would have been nice to hang with them for longer.

The Tempe crowd was a bit smaller, but equally engaged. Again, lots of questions about relationships and feelings and not so much about how to toggle a switch. I like that change, I must say.

Public and motivational speaking will clearly fill an ever-expanding part of my professional life. I can’t keep counting on doing scenes to keep me going. One side or the other is bound to lose interest, sooner or later! I love helping people find ways to enjoy sex more and dread it less. My upcoming speaking engagements in the fall are a start to that.

Flying East

In Miami I’m meeting up with my wonderful assistant, Alex. If you’re a regular on my webshow, you’ll know him from there. I’ll be working for a company, the name of which, I believe, is Venetian. High Culture to Catch on TV

On HBO, on August 25, there will be the TV premiere of a fantastic documentary by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders (he was the artist behind XXX:Thirty Porn Star Portraits), “The Black List, volume 1.” Ernest and I attended the Los Angeles premiere of it last night. The movie was the final show in the 12th annul Black Film Festival, and the house was packed with people. It’s a much different format than “Thinking XXX,” Timothy’s doc on the making of the book.

It’s a series of portraits of important Black artists, politicians, athletes, etc., come to life. Timothy shot them for the upcoming book, and lit the sets for the on-camera interviews, which were conducted by Elvis Mitchell, of Rolling Stone Magazine fame. We never hear or see Elvis, but you can tell he’s asking some great questions by the responses we see.

Some of the interviewees are well known: Toni Morrison, Serena Williams, Rev. Al Sharpton (separated at birth from Ron Jeremy, I swear!), Slash, Colin Powell, Andrew Young, Chris Rock, Kareem Abdul Jabar, Bill T. Jones, and many more. Very moving, with a lot of laugh-out-loud moments, too. I recommend it highly and predict that the DVD, out in a month or so, will be a must-have for Black families all over the country.

After the screening was over, I saw that Mr. Marcus was in attendance, too. It was great to see him! I just think he’s one of the best-ever on camera guys. He gives great hug, too, btw.

I can’t wait for Volume 2.

After the show, Timothy, Elvis, Ernest, Marcus, me and about six others went to dinner and had a great time chewing the fat about all sorts of things: art, politics, etc. It was just great to hang with so many smart people.

ROCKING and ROLLING

Yes, I certainly felt the earthquake Tuesday morning! I was working in the studio next door, where I have my computer. I’m in my robe when the rumbling starts. Right after the rumbling comes the shaking. It feels and sounded like I was in a tenement next to a freight rail line. Nothing fell off the shelves, but the lights did swing for several minutes after the shaking stopped. I think it lasted about 25-30 seconds. It certainly gets your attention, does an earthquake. Do I run? Dive under the desk (the best thing to do, apparently, is to get under a desk or table)? I ended up just standing where I was and enjoying the ride.

Five point four on the scale is classed as “moderate.” Six point oh and up are considered “big” and anything over a seven is “severe” or “massive.” Each point represents a ten-fold in- or decrease in magnitude.

So, after it was over I went about my day as usual, as did most of Los Angeles. Some stores had to put things back on the shelves, but no one was hurt and no buildings fell down. Some brick ones lost a few, as brick and mortar is one of the worst ways to build in earthquake country.

I was preparing the studio later on Tuesday when the excitement continued. Ten minutes before show time the fire alarm went off. Beep beep beep. “The fire alarm has been activated. Please take the stairs down and meet outside and do not return until authorized to do so by authorities” over and over and over. And over.

Great. I’m in my outfit. I don’t think that anything is really happening, truth be told. Most likely someone burned dinner and the smoke alarm in the apartment went off. I’m not disposed to walk down ten flights of stairs in a robe and lingerie, with a show to do. Besides, the building is made of glass, concrete and steel. Not too flammable. There was no explosion, etc., so I figured that staying put would be the best thing to do. Right before showtime the firefighters showed up and I knew that they’d get to the bottom of it and turn off the frigging alarm!

I’m off this weekend to Northern California for our annual family picnic. I’ll fly up tonight and bunk with my sister and her family. I hope everyone’s summer is going well. The fires here in California are not near to where I live, but they do threaten something very dear to my heart and history: Tassajara Hot Springs.

Tassajara is a Zen monastery set in the Los Padres national forest. It’s directly inland from Carmel and is surrounded on all sides by forest. It’s been threatened by fire many times before, but it’s gotten very close this time. It’s the height of what should be the summer guest season, when a lot the year’s revenues come in, but it’s been evacuated for over two weeks already. The crew remaining behind is as ready as it can be: trained and on alert. The pumps connected to the swimming pool are hooked up, the brush has been cleared back, the sprinklers for the cabin roofs are in good working order and there is a watch on duty 24/7. All they can do now is wait.

Tassajara is in the bottom of a canyon. Fire moves more slowly downhill, thankfully, but a lightening strike can hit anywhere and start a fire. The whole state is tense. Why can’t we have some of that excess water from the midwest, darn it?

Interesting news from San Francisco:

Around 2:00 p.m. Monday, after posing outside San Francisco City Hall with our cartons of petitions for a few photos, backers of the measure to defund enforcement of prostitution laws in San Francisco delivered forms bearing 12,673 signatures to the Elections Department. This was after thoroughly vetting the signatures ourselves and crossing out those of people who lived outside San Francisco, did not list an address, etc.

Given that the required number of valid signatures we needed to turn in was only 7,168 and we were shooting for 11,000 in order to have a reasonable margin to cover signatures ruled invalid, we believe we are in very good shape. Barring some truly unexpected occurrence, this measure will appear before San Francisco voters on the November 4 ballot.

The Elections Department has up to 30 days to check and verify the signatures we’ve submitted, and will inform us when they are ready to begin this process, which we will have people observing.

Meanwhile, we plan to plunge ahead with the campaign to get this measure passed. At least a handful of vociferous opponents are determined to have the city government continue wasting taxpayer money to the tune of around $11.4 million a year arresting, prosecuting, and “re-educating” San Franciscans who choose to engage in consensual sexual activities.

This could be the most important fight for sexual freedom in SF since Proposition Q, the Libertarian Party’s daring 1979 measure to abolish the vice squad.

The more he looks and talks and acts like a regular politician, the more he’ll turn off those who are for him because he seems so different.

So, I had an amazing day at work Thursday, for Black Market. I was in “Little Red Rides the Hood, episode 4.” I can’t wait to see how the whole scene worked out.

I think it’s an amazing day when a major political party in the United States has nominated a Black man to lead the ticket. On the plane to DC. I”m on the board of the Woodhull Freedom Foundation (www.woodhullfoundation.org) and we’re having our annual (my first) board meeting. I’m in a cab at 6:30 Friday morning to catch an eight am plane to Washington. Carol Queen (carolqueen.com) will be coming in from SF and we’ll be picked up by my friend Cathy for a ride to the hotel. There’s a small meet and greet Friday night and I hope my books get there in time! Saturday and Sunday we’ll be meeting 9-5, with lunch breaks and an Italian dinner on Saturday. Sunday evening I fly home, landing at midnight.

On the 9th all I have to do is a cameo for Stormy Daniel’s newest epic from Wicked, “Operation Tropical Stormy.” You’ll not even see my face, but I’m happy to support any porn comedy.
