Nurse Energy

I didn't leave nursing behind when I stepped onto a porn set. I brought it with me — the assessment skills, the advocacy, the patience, the ability to stay regulated when someone else is dysregulated. That's what nurse energy is: a nervous system that knows how to hold steady so another nervous system can borrow that steadiness until it finds its own.

People confuse care with coddling. They think being gentle means never naming hard things. But a nurse doesn't pretend a wound isn't infected because the patient is scared of the cleaning. She cleans it — with warning, with consent, with lidocaine if needed, with her hand steady on the patient's shoulder — because healing requires honesty. That's the push. Not pressure. Not "push through." Push when the patient is ready means: I see your capacity. I'll meet you at the edge of it. I won't pull you past it, and I won't let you pretend the edge isn't there.

In sex education, this looks like slowing down when someone's breath goes shallow. It looks like naming the freeze response without pathologizing it: "Your body is protecting you. That's smart. Let's not override it." It looks like staying present when someone dissociates during touch — not checking out, not rushing to "fix" the moment, just a hand on a shoulder, a low voice: "I'm here. Take your time." The body learns safety through co-regulation, not through being told it's safe.

I've held space for people who've never been touched without expectation. Who've never said no and been believed. Who've performed pleasure so long they don't know what real sensation feels like. Nurse energy doesn't perform. It witnesses. It asks, "What does your body need right now?" and waits for the answer — even if the answer is silence. Especially then. That's not passive. That's the most active thing I know how to do.
